EPR model for the Langkawi Pilot Project Workshop

MAREA together with KPKT and SW Corp has organised a 2 days workshop on 4 – 5 Oct, 2022 at SWCorp headquarter in Cyberjaya.

The main purpose of the workshop is to discuss the pilot projects that MAREA together with KPKT and SW Corp, would like to carry out in Langkawi under Phase 2 – Intervention and to formulate the EPR mechanism for Langkawi in terms of Operation, Consumer Education & Public Awareness (CEPA), Legislation and Financing.

Phase 1 – Baseline Study on the MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) results was presented. Packaging recycling rate in Langkawi is still low; ie 22/6%. Household packaging recycling rate is less than 10%. There is definitely a lot of improvement needed to increase the household packaging recycling rate.

All the relevant stakeholders (MAREA and members, Ministry of Housing and Local Government of Malaysia(KPKT), SWCorp Malaysia, E-Idaman, Green Resource Recovery Sdn Bhd (GRRSB), WWF, German International Cooperation (GIZ), Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA), Environment / Waste Management Specialist – Dr LC Theng,  National Solid Waste Management Department (JPSPN) had managed to join the workshop to provide their valuable views and opinions on the intervention to bridge the gap.

It was fruitful session as we were able to garnered practical feedback from all stakeholders who attended the 2 days workshop. With the collected feedback and constructive discussion, this will contribute to formulate the Pilot projects that we would like to carry out in November / December 2022.
